About Basil Leismeister
Basil Leismeister (1933-2015) learned the craft of jiggering as a young man while working in several Medicine Hat potteries from 1950 until 1967, including Medalta Potteries. After a successful career with the City of Medicine Hat, Basil returned to work for the Friends of Medalta Society (FOMS) to teach others this unique skill. Basil is responsible for passing on the craft of jiggering to us from the factories.
Basil stamped his name on the items he produced for FOMS between 1997 and 2004 as a means of distinguishing his work from the items produced by his students and co-workers. Basil estimated that he produced over 5,983,600 crocks in his lifetime.
Basil passed away in 2015 and very few of his signed pieces are left. These unique signed items tell the story of how one man shared his skill to prevent it from being lost in the changing industrial landscape.
